Freebird Barber & Goods

Cause i’m as freeeee as a bird nowwwww (singing terribly)

For those of you who are familiar with Freebird Barber & Goods, you already know what I'm about to say. And for those who are not, allow me to introduce you to something you've been missing out on.

Freebird is a cozy barbershop situated on Main St. in Phoenicia. It is owned and operated by Sam, a master barber who is extraordinary at what she does. Not only will she give you the best haircuts, but she will also make you feel like you've been friends for a lifetime.

Services range from haircuts to skin fades, beard trims, and even those indulgent hot towel shaves. I must admit, I haven't treated myself to one of those YET, but that shouldn't stop you from experiencing it.

Go book an appointment (walk-ins are by chance) and see what Freebird is all about.

P.S. be sure to check out the back room when you're in and maybe score yourself a book, a record, or a handmade knife from one of the pop-up vendors!

Hawk + Hive 🖼️

Hawk + Hive was established in Andes, NY in 2021 by Jayne Parker. The gallery is an absolute gem with art, books, home goods, and more. They curate 6 weekly shows throughout the year, featuring the work of emerging and mid-career artists in a range of media.

Currently, they are in the final days of Magda Biernat's show, Ephemeral Monuments, which offers you a perfect opportunity to go visit before it ends on the 28th (then grab a cider over at Wayside).

Here is a bit more info about the show:

Hawk + Hive is delighted to announce Ephemeral Monuments, a retrospective comprised of 3 bodies of photographic work from Magda Biernat's year-long study of the American continents across 17 countries, from the Antarctic to the Arctic Circle.

There are stories humming below the surface of Magda Biernat’s photographs: stories of migration and discovery, of loss and transformation. And there are stories that emerge from the resonant spaces between the images. Seeing them beside one another, one glimpses fragments of a grand narrative, a complex–often devastating–dance of cause and effect between wilderness and the human world.

The journey documented in this exhibition is the stuff of modern legend. It began with a flight from New York to Santiago, Chile, from there via bus to Tierra del Fuego and then by boat to Antarctica. From there, Biernat and her partner, writer and illustrator Ian Webster, traveled directly north, over land through the South, Central and then North American continents. They concluded in Utqiagvik, Alaska, the northernmost town in the United States. Biernat took photographs with a Mamiya 6 medium format film camera throughout the journey, a process which she describes as deeply intentional–each roll of film had only 12 frames, and Biernat was careful to make every frame count. The journey was published as a series of dispatches in the New Yorker photo blog, and is the subject of two books: Adrift (Ink & Bellows, 2015) and The Edge of Knowing (Kehrer, 2019).

Adrift: A project that uses a visual language as a means of polar comparison. By pairing photographs of Antarctic icebergs and empty Iñupiat Eskimo hunting cabins, it offers a restrained commentary on the parallel effects of global climate change at opposite ends of the Earth.

Towards the Reborn Sun: Chullpas are ancient Aymara funeral towers originally built in the 10th and 11th centuries for nobles and their families. They are found across the Altiplano in Peru and Bolivia. All of the chullpas have small openings facing east, towards the rising sun. Corpses in each tomb were typically placed in a fetal position along with some of their belongings, including clothing and jewelry. The images of chullpas–tombs reveal the personalities of these edifices, which, in their ancient austerity, are incredibly tender. Standing plainly in their arid, rocky world, the chullpas are monuments not only to the lives they entomb, but to the hands that built them thousands of years ago.

The Edge of Knowing: The culmination of a year-long journey from Antarctica to the Arctic; a journey undertaken with the goal of understanding the places that from the vantage point of the United States, are often simply thought of as being beyond “America.” A collection of photographs that try to redefine the American conceit of an idealistic, utopian dream as a pan-American vision that is shared across the furthest extremes of the continents. Too often political borders represent the limits of curiosity and imagination. The Edge of Knowing takes us beyond the boundaries that traditionally define national identity. The results are an exploration of places both foreign and familiar. All share the unique physical characteristics that shape the landscape of the Americas, and the rich indigenous imprint of the pre- Columbian world.

Originally from Poland and currently based in NYC and the Catskills, Magda Biernat is a contemporary art photographer whose work deals with the concepts of home, belonging, in-betweenness and cultural identity. She received her MFA in New Media from Transart Institute in Berlin and New York. Her photographs have been published in the New Yorker, the New York Times, National Geographic, Interior Design, Wallpaper, Metropolis, Dwell and Afar. Her work has been exhibited in Poland, Belgium, France, Canada, Nigeria, The Philippines, Taiwan, Japan and the United States. She is a recipient of awards such as 2021 Film Photo Award, the Center 2016 Director's Choice Award, LensCulture 2015 Emerging Talents Award, TMC/Kodak Grant, Lucie Foundation Awards and Magenta Foundation Flash Forward.”

Less Waste 👩‍🌾

Not So Fun Fact: Food waste that ends up in landfills produces methane, a greenhouse gas that is 80x more warming than Carbon Dioxide. Simply reducing the food waste in your garbage significantly helps the climate. And what you can do with your waste food is simple: Turn it into soil by composting!

Thanks to Shandaken CAC and Phoenicia Farm for leading the charge, there is now food scrap collections live at Shandaken Town Hall. Collections take place on the same days as recycling Monday, Thursday, and Saturdays from 7:30am-12:30pm.

Skye 🫠

Skye is a 8 year old female Belgium Malinois. Skye is a super chill girl who is eager for adventure and to find her new family! Skye is always smiling and absolutely loves the people she's decided are her friends. Once you're on Team Skye, you are in! She is all about big adventures, going on walks, and exploring the wide-open world. She does amazingly well on a leash, making her a good hiking buddy. Once she gets to know you, it is constant cuddles. Skye needs you to be her pack leader and to let her know everything is good, to be ready for her to look to you for direction and respond to your moods. Skye would do best in a home with no other dogs, no kids, and possibly a cat - she would prefer to be your one and only!” - More pics and info
