Bramley Fire Tower 🗼 

The other day, a subscriber reached out with a story that I wanted to share with you.

In the past, fires spread rapidly due to the abundance of fuel in the forests from activities like logging and tanning, combined with poor communication and transportation systems. These fires could often be extensive and cause significant devastation.

As a result, fire towers were established on mountaintops throughout New York State to serve as an early warning system. These towers were manned by Fire Tower Observers who kept watch for any early signs of smoke or flame. When smoke was detected, the observers used phone systems to relay the fire's location to Forest Rangers, who would then dispatch personnel to systemically extinguish it.

The Bramley Mountain Fire Tower was erected as part of this system in 1950. An 80-foot Aeromotor Company LS40 fire tower was installed on the summit of Bramley Mountain by the New York State DEC, accompanied by a three-room pine-paneled observer's cabin. Local electric and telephone companies installed lines to the cabin and tower, and a radio antenna was also erected nearby.

For two decades, Fire Observers and Forest Rangers monitored the local area for fires from this tower, working in conjunction with the Mt. Utsayantha and Balsam Lake Fire Tower Observers to triangulate locations. According to the DEC, the Bramley Mountain tower was also visible from the Hunter Mountain and Tremper Mountain towers.

As time went on, fire towers and their Observers were gradually replaced by air surveillance. Consequently, funding for the fire tower system began to decline, leading to the closure of many towers across New York State in the 1970s and 1980s. The Conservation Department sold some of the fire towers to the highest bidder, including the Bramley Mountain tower. In 1975, the DEC sold the tower for $50 to a local dairy farmer named Pete Clark from Delhi. Mr. Clark and his helpers dismantled the tower with great care, preserving all parts and even coding many of them for future reassembly. The Clarks had hoped to re-erect the tower on a hill on their farm, but they were unable to do so.

Fast forward to the present, after 50 years of sitting on the farm, a group is now working to restore and return the tower to its original summit. They anticipate beginning the reconstruction of the tower in June 2024!

The Andes Hotel on TV 📺️ 

If you haven’t heard, The Andes Hotel was featured on the show In With the Old. The episode covered the renovation of the 1850s hotel and tavern, under the new ownership of Derek Curl who purchased and reopened the establishment in 2020.

RIP Mary Dette Clark ❤️ 

Dette Flies, the oldest family run fly shop in the world, lost a true legend the other day.

“With heartfelt sadness we share the news on the passing of our beloved Mary Dette Clark. Daughter of Walt and Winnie Dette, Mary was an extraordinary fly tyer in the Catskill Tradition. She helped run the family business for many years with her parents, and later her grandson, Joe Fox.

Mary was born and raised in Roscoe, NY. She later moved to Long Island with her late husband Gene to raise her family, and spent many fishing seasons in the Catskills working and tying at the shop. She enjoyed welcoming customers with her warm smile and the kindness that she greeted everyone with will be remembered. An avid Mets fan, Mary enjoyed ball games, a good cup of coffee, reading, and a glass of red wine. She was a daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and our friend.

Mary was a member of the CFFCM Hall Of Fame, a Lifetime Achievement award recipient from the Federation of Fly Fishers along with other accolades. Mary was fond of sharing her tying skills and techniques to those who asked. She would gladly smile and lend her expertise.

A service will be planned at a later date in the Catskills to honor her.”

He is head-over-paws in love with treats, and will do just about anything for them. He likes things to go at his own pace, and prefers a quiet, calm environment. He lives a rich inner life and needs respect and space from both people and other pets. He knows exactly how he likes things, and would need a family who understands that about him. Vincent would need a home with only adults, no cats, and would need to be the only dog in the home.”
