Happy Monday

January 8th

Events can change, because things happen and I’m not perfect…

Alright, folks, we’re back, and this time we have some real snow on the ground, finally.

We just hit 800 subscribers, and as always, I appreciate all the great feedback, support, and sponsorship convos, which will help grow Catskill Crew and lead to bigger, better, and badder things 🔥

Enough rambling, lets get into it.

URBAN COWBOY LODGE

A shot, a beer, and a room for $199 - details below

Urban Cowboy is ringing in the New Year with NEW HOURS. The Lodge has expanded its bar hours so you can swing by for a drink 7 days a week.

They also extended their Restaurant & Parlor service hours on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to 10pm... and there’s more to come, so stay tuned!

To make a mid-week stop even more enticing, they are running a little neighborly promotion. Available Tuesday & Wednesday from 3pm to 9pm, come by and enjoy a shot, a beer, and a room for $199. The rooms are subject to availability and no calling ahead.

The Winter Sour 🏔️

I recently stumbled upon a drink while bellied up to the bar, “researching” new winter cocktails. Somehow, this one has eluded me all of these years, but it was so good I thought it was worthy of sharing with each and every one of you.

The Winter Sour is super simple and hits different when snow is on the ground. Traditionally, you’ll find the sour template to consist of a spirit, citrus, sweetener, and many times, egg white. Names like the Pisco Sour, Daiquiri, and Sidecar probably ring a bell.

This drink calls for Campari, that tasty Italian bitter red liqueur, which is 48 proof versus the more boozy options that clock in around 80 proof. I suppose you can always just polish off more of them if it was one of those kinds of days. This is a judgement-free zone after all.

I’m writing this at 7:57am and this is looking unacceptably appealing right now

What you’ll need:

  • 1oz Campari

  • 1.5oz Freshly squeezed Meyer lemon juice

  • 1.5oz Clover honey syrup

  • 1oz Egg white

  • Leaves from a small rosemary sprig

Steps:

  • First things first, let’s quickly whip up the clover honey… Add ½ cup clover honey and ½ cup water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the honey is dissolved. Allow to cool and transfer to an airtight container. This will last up to a month in the fridge

  • Now onto the drink… Add the rosemary leaves and honey syrup into a shaker and muddle gently

  • Add the Campari, Meyer lemon juice and egg white, then vigorously dry-shake (without ice) for 15 seconds.

  • Pile in some ice and shake it like a snow globe again until well-chilled.

  • Double-strain into a cocktail glass.

  • Garnish with a small rosemary sprig.

Sip up & enjoy!

Our Mighty Hudson 🌊

If you’ve been around me for over 7 minutes, you know I’ll nerd out at length about the creeks, tributaries, and rivers of the Catskills. So naturally, when I stumbled across this event hosted by The Dutchess Land Conservacy, I had to share it here.

It’s online. It’s free. It’s happening on Wednesday at 6pm. See you there.

“Our January 2024 Earth Matters Winter Webinar brings us retired freshwater ecologist for the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies Dave Strayer. Join Dave for a discussion of the mighty and majestic Hudson River. Since Henry Hudson sailed up the river in 1609, it has seen profound developments. In addition to the changes in the river channel itself, overfishing, species invasions, changes in land use in the watershed, and pollution have all helped to transform the Hudson. The Hudson River is a wonderful waterway and a magical place, but it is far different from the river of 1609 and is likely very different from the river it will be in the future. Along with the history and current usage of the Hudson, consideration of how to best anticipate and manage these coming changes will be a core component of the discussion.

Dave Strayer worked as a freshwater ecologist for the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies for more than 30 years. He was part of a team that studied the Hudson River for more than 30 years, and is the author of a small book about the Hudson (The Hudson Primer: The Ecology of an Iconic River). He now lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he is trying to finish a book on freshwater biodiversity.”

Meet Polka

“Polka is a 4 year old female beagle mix. She is a sassy, opinionated little lady. She thinks rather highly of herself, so be prepared to work to win this girl's heart. Once you do, she will be your little princess, playing dress-up in doggie costumes, going on car rides, and running after you wherever you go. She loves her squeaky toys, though good luck getting her to share them with you! And she loves full-bodied pets, to get in every ounce of love her little body can contain. The ideal home for Polka would be one with only adults, and she needs to be the only animal in the home. Otherwise, how can she receive all the attention a little princess like her deserves?” - More Polka pics and info
