Catskill Crew Newsletter 📬

Letter #18

Howdy Friends…

February 19th

Events can change, because things happen and I’m not perfect…

👋 Hey there

A few quick things before we dive in…

📊 The poll results are in from last week and the data shows that the vast majority of you are locals. Love to see it.

🎣 For the fly fishers reading this, frenchies have been doing the trick for me - what’s been working for you? I’ll be out on the rivers this week. Come find me and lets have a beer.

👕 We’re partnering up with a local screen printer to make some sweet Catskill Crew shirts printed up, ultra heavy-duty quality to withstand whatever you throw at them, more details soon.

Anywho, we have a pretty great newsletter this week, so lets get into it - And as always, reach out and say hi!

Appreciate you,

Michael 🤠

Ashokan Reservoir 🎞️

🚰 Ashokan Reservoir

As a history nerd, some of the most interesting Catskill topics are the reservoir systems. Specifically, the Ashokan Reservoir which was a triumph of engineering, built mainly with pick-and-shovel between 1907 and 1915 to supply drinking water to New York City. A dozen communities were destroyed, thousands of acres were flooded, and over 2,000 graves were relocated. As you can imagine, all of this sparked some seriously long lasting controversy and conflict between the Catskills and New York City.

It’s a fascinating tale - so I put together 3 separate resources to check out depending on your interest level.

1️⃣ A short read: here

2️⃣ One of the best books I’ve read on the topic is The Last of the Handmade Dams, The Story of the Ashokan Reservoir, written by Bob Steuding. It can be a tough book to track down, but I did find it for sale here, or you can reach out to your local bookstore and see if they are able to find it.

3️⃣ Bob Steuding also did a great presentation at the Ashokan Center back in 2015, you can watch it here

Also, the Olive Free Library has a great exhibit!

🧑‍🎨 Artport Artist Residency

If you aren’t familiar with ArtPort, well here’s the spiel…

Artport Kingston is a contemporary art gallery & curatorial project space housed in the historic Cornell Steamboat Building along the Rondout Creek in Kingston. They aim to create art experiences that offer unconventional interactions with contemporary art to a wide range of audiences. Artport works with artists to transform unorthodox art spaces into imaginative, user-friendly platforms that defy genre and often lend to playful, engaging relationships with the artworks.

Through art exhibitions, performances, gatherings, and beyond, ArtPort Kingston explores the environment and cultural/historical heritage of the Rondout Creek, and serves as an harbor at the confluence of art, community, and historical preservation.

They recently announced they’re accepting applications for their residency program, which includes two different types:

(1) RESIDENTIAL MICRO-RESIDENCIES FOR NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL MID-CAREER AND ESTABLISHED ARTISTS WORKING IN ALL DISCIPLINES.

(2) NON-RESIDENTIAL GALLERY RESIDENCIES FOR LOCAL ARTISTS LIVING IN THE GREATER HUDSON VALLEY REGION.

You can learn more about the residency here

👨‍🔬 Chugability Report

West Kill Brewing: Kaaterskill IPA

Oh, wait, what’s that, your not an IPA person you say?

Look, I’m not a big IPA’er either. But this beer is in a category all its own. It’s a 4 season sipper, whether your in the woods, in the city, on the river, or on the mountain - this is the chuggable beer you’ve always needed.
