I sat down with our wonderful neighbor, Sophie Grant, to hear about her favorite farm stands, markets, and general stores. Spots where she goes to fill her basket and support the local farmers and makers behind them.

If you don’t know Sophie, well, she wears many hats — including being the co-founder of the Phoenicia Farmers Market.

FROM THE MOUNTAINS

TAKE A GUESS

Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) is a classic spring ephemeral wildflower native to the Catskills. It blooms early, sets seed, and goes dormant by mid-to-late summer as the canopy closes. You can spot it in mature hardwood, floodplains, slopes, and thickets.

You may have expected to see a red flower… but no… the name comes from the bright red or reddish-orange sap that oozes from its underground rhizome when cut.
